Helga Markowitsch

Helga Markowitsch (born November 17, 1944 in Brunn am Gebirge ) is a former Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and a commercial clerk. From 1987 to 1998 she was a member of the Austrian Federal Council and from 2005 to 2009 mayor of Brunn am Gebirge.

education and profession

Markowitsch attended elementary school from 1950 to 1954 and then graduated from secondary school from 1954 to 1958 and from commercial school from 1958 to 1960 . Between 1960 and 1964 she worked as an employee in the state party secretariat of the SPÖ Lower Austria and was then employed from 1964 to 1972 in the Chamber for Workers and Salaried Employees for Lower Austria in Mödling. She also worked for the Gierlinger company in Brunn am Gebirge from 1979 to 1980 and then from 1982 to 1987 for the association “Safe Energy - Safe Future”.

Politics and functions

Markowitsch began her political career in 1979 when she was elected to the local council of Brunn am Gebirge . In 1984 she was promoted to a managing member of the municipal council of Brunn am Gebirge and in 1990 took over the office of first vice mayor. She was a consultant for services for five years and headed the social department as Vice Mayor. In 2005 she was elected mayor of her home parish and held this office until 2009. Within the party, Markowitsch acted as the deputy district chairman of the SPÖ Mödling, was a member of the state party executive committee of the SPÖ Lower Austria and, from 1979, was district women's officer of the SPÖ Mödling. In addition, she was a member of the state women's committee of the SPÖ Lower Austria and was a member of the federal women's committee of the SPÖ. She represented the SPÖ Lower Austria from December 1, 1987 to April 15, 1998 as a member of the Federal Council, and from January 1, 1992 she was also the Secretary of the Federal Council.

The first piano , blues and boogie-woogie festival took place in Brunn am Gebirge in 2007 under her patronage .
