Helga Voigt

Helga Voigt (born November 16, 1940 ; † September 28, 1956 ) was a swimmer from the German Democratic Republic .

Life

Helga Voigt was a successful competitive athlete from a very young age. In 1953, when she was only twelve years old, she won the 200 m chest at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Bucharest and was GDR champion in the 100 m and 200 m chest. She was able to defend the title over 200 m breaststroke the following year. In 1953 she was awarded the title of Master of Sport .

In the early morning of September 28, 1956, Helga Voigt suffered severe smoke inhalation in a fire in the "Luisenhof" restaurant in Dresden run by her parents . She died on the same day in hospital and was buried on October 2, 1956 in the Weißer Hirsch forest cemetery.
