Helge Karch

Helge Karch (born July 6, 1953 in Otterberg ) is a German microbiologist .

Life

Helge Karch studied biology at the Technical University of Darmstadt from 1973 to 1979 and received a doctorate in natural sciences at the Darmstadt Institute for Microbiology in 1982 . From 1982 to 1989 he was a research assistant at the Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Hamburg .

In 1990 a call to the professorship at the Institute for Hygiene and Microbiology at the University of Würzburg . In 2001 he moved to the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster and became director of the Institute for Hygiene at the Münster University Hospital .

The main research areas of Karch are fine typing and infection chain clarification in food and hospital infections. He is also very involved in the field of basic BSE research. In 2011 he identified the type HUSEC 41 of the EHEC intestinal bacterium .
