Heliaster solaris is a presumably extinct starfish that was found in the waters off the Galápagos island of Española .
features
Heliaster solaris had 22 to 24 cylindrical and elongated arms that were more or less clearly banded and tapered towards the end. They were a third longer than the body diameter. The dorsal rows of spines were longer and more compressed than the ventral ones. The spines, the pedicellaria, and the madrepora plate were light yellow in color.

Heliaster solaris disappeared after 1983 when the water temperature off the Galápagos Islands rose due to the El Niño phenomenon.
Systematics
This species was first mentioned in 1840 by John Edward Gray as Asterias multiradiata and later as Heliaster multiradiatus in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History . Since Carl von Linné had already used the name Asterias multiradiata (current valid name: Capillaster multiradiata ) in 1758, Gray's taxon name became an invalid homonym . In 1920 Austin Hobart Clark published the replacement name Heliaster solaris .
