Helix tower fish pass at the mouth of the Schwentine in the port of Kiel

The first plant, which was built under the direction of the Bochum University of Applied Sciences, is located in Schwentinental ( Raisdorf district ) near Kiel and is part of the Rastorfer Mühle power plants . The structure is unique in the world. The slope of around three percent is overcome in Raisdorf over a length of 200 meters using 36 pools. The round shape of the step basin prevents possible injuries to the fish.

It was financed mainly from EU funds with around 550,000 euros. Construction began at the beginning of 2004, on April 27, 2005 the pass was flooded. The construction became known to a wider public because the first implementation was described by the taxpayers 'association and the Schleswig-Holstein State Nature Conservation Union as a waste of taxpayers' money.

The system was developed at the Bochum University of Applied Sciences . It should enable fishing where conventional fishways are hardly feasible to overcome the height difference at a dam. The architect Hans Wilhelm Peters designed and patented the meander fish pass.

According to the EU Water Framework Directive , dams in protected areas must be equipped with suitable fish passes by 2015. Another smaller system was later built at the mouth of the Schwentine in the port of Kiel.
