Hell's Gates

Hells Gates (actually Hell's Gates , German  gates of hell ) is the name of the strait that forms the access to Macquarie Harbor in western Tasmania . The strait is known for its treacherous currents and shallows .

The name comes from the inmates of the Macquarie Harbor penal colony in the 19th century, as the new inmates arrived at the penal colony across the strait. The strait was gradually dredged from 1909 to allow larger ships to access the port.
