Hell Gates

This article describes the strait in the South Shetland archipelago. There is a risk of confusion with the strait Hells Gates off the coast of Tasmania and with the strait Hells Gate off the east coast of Victoria Land in Antarctica.

The Hell Gates (English for hell gates ) are a 20 m wide strait in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It runs between the cliff rocks in front of Devils Point , the southwestern extension of Livingston Island , and connects Osogovo Bay with Raskuporis Cove .

The name for this strait has been established around 1821. Seal hunters named them in memory of the accidents that occurred there - often with the loss of life.
