Hella Ranner

Hella Ranner (born May 10, 1951 in Graz ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and was last member of the European Parliament since 2009 . On March 29, 2011, she announced her resignation. After a trial of embezzlement and serious fraud , she was sentenced to 26 months in prison in 2015.

education and profession

Ranner attended an elementary school and the Ursuline high school in Graz from 1957 to 1969. She then studied business administration and law at the University of Graz , where she obtained a master's degree in 1974. soc. oec. graduated in 1976 and obtained a Dr. iur. received his doctorate.

During her studies, she already worked in the marketing department of a ski boot factory in Graz. After graduating from university, she worked as a university assistant at the Law Faculty of the University of Graz (Institute for Constitutional Law).

In 1977 she moved to Vienna to work as a consultant in the constitutional service of the Federal Chancellery, but she only held this position for a short time. In 1979 she began training as a lawyer in a law firm in Graz. After completing this training, she worked as an independent lawyer in Graz in 1982. From 2004 until she was sent to the European Parliament as a member of the ÖVP, she was also a member of a law firm.

Political career

Ranner began her political career in 1988 when she was elected to the Graz municipal council, where she remained until 1996. In 2009 she was elected to the European Parliament as a candidate for the ÖVP, where she was a member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) and the delegation for relations with Canada. In addition, Ranner was a deputy member of the Committee for Culture and Education (CULT) and a deputy member of the delegation for Croatia.

On the basis of allegations that she received reimbursements from her work as a member of the European Union unlawfully or misappropriated to repay private debts, as well as a complaint from the law firm for which she had previously worked that she had obtained bonuses and demanded unjustified fees over several years shortly after Ernst Strasser's resignation at the end of March 2011, she also returned as a member of parliament.

The lawsuit following her previous employer's complaint began on November 4, 2013. On April 10, 2014, she was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for embezzlement and fraud . She succeeded in reopening the case and was finally convicted in the second case for breach of trust and serious fraud.
