The Hellabrunn mixture is a solution of anesthetic Xylazine and ketamine stunning animals.

history

The mixture was developed by Henning Wiesner , the former director of Hellabrunn Zoo , for use in injection syringes that are fired with a special compressed air gun or a blowpipe .

composition

The modified Hellabrunn mixture is an aqueous solution with 125 mg xylazine / ml and 100 mg ketamine / ml.

dosage

The Hellabrunn mixture is characterized by the highest effectiveness with the smallest volume , since even a very small dose leads to a deep and painless anesthesia. Only amounts between 0.2 and 0.6 ml are necessary per 10 kg of body mass - depending on the species. The effect, which may last for a few hours, also enables larger interventions such as operations. The small amount is the prerequisite for being able to fire a small injection syringe with a blowpipe or compressed air weapon. As a rule, up to 10 ml of the solution can be injected, but the syringe cannot be reliably emptied if the volume exceeds 5 ml.

The effectiveness of the Hellabrunn mixture also depends on the animal's state of excitement. It works effectively with calm and relaxed "patients"; Agitation or agitation, such as B. triggered by coercive measures, lead to an unreliable effect.

The Hellabrunn mixture may only be used by a veterinarian or a trained and competent person.

application

It is best to inject intramuscularly into the thigh muscles.

The syringe that is fired is designed as an arrow , has a plunger under gas pressure and a feathered end. The cannula is often barbed and has a side outlet that is closed with a small rubber or silicone ring . If the cannula penetrates the muscle tissue, the ring is pushed back and the solution is injected.

The blowpipe is mostly used - especially at short distances - because it offers advantages because of its silence and the lower risk of injury if the syringe penetrates too deeply.

A distance injection is the least stressful way to stun an animal. In addition, the risk of attacks by dangerous animals is significantly reduced, as it is possible to shoot outside the escape distance or behind a barricade.
