The light gray bedstraw ( Epirrhoe molluginata ), also known as the gray-brown bedstraw , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the spanner family (Geometridae).

The wingspan of the moth is 23 to 27 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings varies from light gray to gray-brown. The forewings show several dark transverse bands, the middle band being different in its width and intensity and also being divided by a whitish field. A clear white wavy line runs near the hem, which continues on the light gray hind wings. Blackish discal spots can be seen on the fore and hind wings.
Caterpillar, pupa
Adult caterpillars are yellow-gray to red-brown in color and show a dark back line that is particularly pronounced at the front and rear end. In the middle area there are V-shaped, whitish, forward-facing back spots.
The doll is light yellow-brown in color.
Geographical distribution and occurrence
The light gray bedstraw spider can be found predominantly in southern Central Europe to the Caucasus . It is missing in Northern Europe. The species inhabits various habitats with bedstraw , but prefers mountainous terrain.
Way of life
The main flight time of the moths are the months May to July. You visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars feed on different types of bedstraw ( Galium ). These include meadow bedstraw ( Galium mollugo ) and forest bedstraw ( Galium sylvaticum ). The caterpillars pupate in a light web on the ground and hibernate as a pupa that sometimes lasts two winters.
Danger
The light gray bedstrawers occur in different numbers in Germany, are absent in some northern and northeastern regions, but are listed as not endangered on the Red List of Endangered Species .
