Hellmut Seemann

Hellmut Theodor Seemann (born December 16, 1953 in Heidelberg ) is a German cultural manager and former president of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar (2001-2019).

Live and act

Seemann is the nephew of the pianist Carl Seemann , who made friends with Hellmut Becker during his student days in Strasbourg . Becker became Seemann's godfather. Seemann attended the Odenwald School , then studied German and philosophy, and from 1977 also law at the universities of Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main. He has been married to the author and translator Annette Seemann since 1985 . In 1986 he was admitted to the Berlin bar. In the same year he then moved to Frankfurt am Main, where he was the personal assistant of Christoph Vitali , the managing director of the municipal cultural society Frankfurt mbH . From 1987 to 1993 he was administrative director and from 1994 to 2001 managing director of the Kulturgesellschaft Frankfurt and at the same time director of the Schirn Kunsthalle . From 1989 to 1993 he was part of the artistic direction of the Theater am Turm .

From June 1, 2001 to 2019, Seemann was President of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar . During his tenure, the Duchess Anna Amalia Library caught fire on September 2, 2004 and its renovation and restoration with completion in 2007. Although it was decided in October 2010 not to extend his contract that expired in 2011, in April 2011 it was completed after a lengthy one Personnel debate and against the previous will of the Minister of Culture Christoph Matschie was elected President of the Cultural Foundation for another four years. At the meeting of the Board of Trustees on June 25, 2013, the contract as President of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar was extended to July 31, 2019. Seemann is a lecturer in the management of cultural institutions at the Liszt School of Music Weimar .

So far, Seemann has mainly emerged as the editor and contributor of art historical writings on the Classical, Weimar and European Modernism.
