Live and act

After completing his training, Waßmer started teaching in the food department at the Lörrach trade school in October 1948, where he worked until his retirement in 1991. Waßmer taught in the areas of meat and flour, passed the state examination for teaching at vocational schools in Freiburg in 1951 and took over the management of the food department in 1971. In August 1980 he took over the management of the Lörrach vocational school as senior studies director until his retirement in 1991.

Hellmut Waßmer was also active in teacher training and curriculum work and was elected spokesman for the heads of the vocational school in South Baden. In the professional association of teachers at vocational schools in Baden-Württemberg he was regional chairman for southern Baden.

Waßmer became a member of the German Youth Hostel Association as early as 1949 and a year later head of the Lörrach local association of the DJV. In 1971 he was elected deputy chairman and in 1975 chairman of the Baden regional association.

He convinced Lord Mayor Egon Hugenschmidt to build a youth hostel in Lörrach, the cornerstone of which was laid in 1980 by Roman Herzog , then Minister of Culture and later Baden-Württemberg's Minister of the Interior , and which was opened by Federal President Karl Carstens in 1982. During his 16-year tenure as chairman of the Baden regional association, the hostel network was further expanded, including a Franco-German meeting place in Breisach. In 1991 Waßmer was appointed honorary chairman of the Baden-Württemberg regional association.

He was also a co-founder of the community foundation in Rheinfelden.
