Helmut Bender (born August 21, 1942 in Werheim ) is a German mathematician who deals with group theory ( finite groups ) and was a professor at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel .

From 1962 Bender studied mathematics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main with a diploma in 1966 and a doctorate under Reinhold Baer in 1967 (at last two transitive permutation groups whose involutions have no fixed points ). 1967/68 he was an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . He then went to the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz , where he completed his habilitation in 1969 and was then a private lecturer and, in 1971, an adjunct professor. In 1970/71 he was also an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago . In 1972 he became a professor in Kiel with a full professorship from 1978.

He is known for simplifying Feit and Thompson's theorem (Odd Order Theorem), the John H. Walter theorem on the classification of simple groups with Sylow-2 Abelian subgroups, and the Daniel Gorenstein and John H. Walter theorem on simple groups with dihedral groups as Sylow-2 subgroups from 1964 (published by Bender 1981).
