Helmut Berger-Tuna (born May 7, 1942 in Vienna ; † September 30, 2009 ) was an Austrian opera, operetta, lied and concert singer ( bass ).

Life

Helmut Berger-Tuna first learned the profession of electrical engineer in his parents' company. At the same time, he studied singing and opera performance at the music academy in his hometown. He later received singing lessons (from Franz Schuch-Tovini ). In 1969 he made his debut at the Landestheater Linz as Lodovico in Otello . Three years later he went to the Graz Opera House as a permanent member of the ensemble. From 1977 to 2007 he was a member of the ensemble of the Stuttgart State Opera , where he was appointed chamber singer in 1985.

Guest performances have taken him to the opera stages of Vienna, Frankfurt a. M., Karlsruhe, Barcelona, ​​Dresden, Milan, Hamburg, Oslo, Berlin, Paris, London, Los Angeles, Seattle, Tokyo etc., to the Salzburg (premier: Baal by F. Cerha 1981) and Bregenz festivals as well as the Seefestspiele Mörbisch. His repertoire included approx. 90 roles in the bass section, a. a. Leporello (Don Giovanni), Osmin (The Abduction from the Seraglio), Kezal (The Bartered Bride), Doktor Bartolo / Don Basilio (The Barber of Seville), Don Magnifico (La Cenerentola), Daland (The Flying Dutchman), Fafner / Fasolt / Hunding (The Ring of the Nibelung), King Heinrich (Lohengrin), Landgrave Hermann (Tannhäuser), Pogner (The Masters Singing of Nuremberg) .

He celebrated success with his star role of Ochs auf Lerchenau in Richard Strauss' opera Der Rosenkavalier, which he sang 207 times. He also enjoyed singing operettas. In 1998 and 2000 he was a guest at the Mörbisch Seefestspiele . Helmut Berger-Tuna was also a popular song and concert singer. He held master classes at the Anton Bruckner Private University and organized several charity gala evenings. He died of complications from heart failure.
