Helmut Berndt (educational scientist)

Helmut Berndt (born June 23, 1924 in Berlin ) is a former German special school teacher and educationalist . He was the institute director in the GDR and from 1958 to 1990 a member of the Berlin city council .

Life

Berndt, the son of a teacher, received a certificate of maturity after attending school and was drafted into military service. After the Second World War he moved to Thuringia . In 1945/46 he initially worked as a farm worker, graduated from the University of Jena in 1945, and after completing a nine-month course at the University of Jena University of Education and passing the first teacher examination in 1946, he began working as a new teacher and pioneer leader at the school in Gumperda .

Berndt joined the Liberal Democratic Party of Germany (LDPD) in 1946 . In 1948 he passed the second teacher examination and in 1951 was given the opportunity to return to his hometown Berlin as a special school teacher for children with tuberculosis. He worked at the special school in the Berlin-Buch Clinic. In 1952 he began an additional course of study at the Institute for Special Schools at the Humboldt University in Berlin , which he completed in 1953 with distinction and a doctorate. From 1953 to 1958 he was employed as a research assistant at the Institute for Special Schools at Humboldt University. In 1957 he received his doctorate in paed. And in 1960 he was appointed senior assistant and head of department at the Institute for Special Schools .

In October 1958 he was elected to the Berlin city council and worked there in the standing commission for health and social affairs.

Together with Peter Voigt, Helmut Berndt helped develop the pedagogy of the physically handicapped and was appointed director of the institute in 1961. After his habilitation in 1967 he was appointed lecturer at the institute for special schools at Humboldt University and in 1975 he was appointed associate professor for education for the physically handicapped.
