Helmut Etschenberg (born June 20, 1947 in Aachen ) is a German local politician of the CDU and former municipal councilor of the urban region of Aachen , North Rhine-Westphalia . He is married and has two children. Etschenberg is involved in several associations at local and regional level, including as chairman of the German Red Cross local association Monschau .

Professional and political career

In 1968 Etschenberg first entered the upper class and, after completing his evening studies, became a municipal civil servant in 1973 in the higher administrative service of the former district of Aachen . In 1978 he moved to the city of Monschau, initially as 1st alderman; In 1979 he was elected city ​​director by the local city council. He stayed in this office for 14 years until he returned to the Aachen district in 1993 as elected district director and department head for social affairs, youth and schools. He remained in these offices until he was elected to the first municipal council of the newly created urban region of Aachen in the 2009 municipal elections . Because of this function, Helmut Etschenberg became Chairman of the Administrative Board of Sparkasse Aachen on January 29, 2010 . On June 15, 2014, he won the runoff election to the city council against the SPD candidate Christiane Karl with 52.2% and a turnout of 22.22%.

On June 20, 2018, over breakfast on the occasion of his 71st birthday, he announced his early retirement at the end of the year. Even close party friends were surprised by the decision of the city council. Tim Grüttemeier became his successor on January 1, 2019 .
