Helmut Habermann

Helmut Habermann (* 1917 in Austria; † December 30, 2009 ) was a German mechanical engineer and pioneer of magnetic bearings .

Vita

In the late 1930s he studied mechanical engineering in Brno . In 1939 he was drafted and spent two winters on the Eastern Front.

Habermann worked in Wernher von Braun's team in Peenemünde from 1943 to 1945 . From 1946 to 1971 he worked at the Laboratoire de recherches balistiques et aéro-dynamiques in Vernon . After the Americans had installed their observation satellites that could detect a golf ball in 1958, Habermann began developing his magnetic bearings. From 1971 to 1976 he worked at the Société européenne de propulsion (SEP).

In 1976 he founded the Svenska Kullagerfabriken (SKF) and the Société de Mécanique Magnétique (S2M), of which Habermann was technical director until 1982. After that he was a technical consultant until 1993.
