Helmut Schagerl (born April 18, 1960 in St. Georgen am Reith ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and construction technician. Schagerl was mayor of St. Georgen from 2009 to 2018 and a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament from 2013 to 2018 .

education and profession

After attending compulsory school, Schagerl completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer from 1975 to 1978 and the preparatory course for the master builder license examination from 1978 to 1982. He attended the foremen's school for structural engineering and also passed the railway engineering examination in 2006. Schagerl worked as a construction technician from 1982 to 1988 and as a construction manager for large-scale construction projects from 1987 at GESIBA Gemeinnützige Siedlungs- und Baugesellschaft mbH, then from 1988 to 1989 as a construction manager for the construction of the Vienna General Hospital in the service of VOEST-ALPINE Medizintechnik GesmbH . In 1989 he moved to EKAZENT Bautenverwaltung GesmbH, where he worked as a construction technician and project manager for various large municipal projects until 1996. After being head of the procurement department in the Vienna branch of ALPINE BauGmbH from 1997 to 1998, he switched to Eisenbahn-Hochleistungsstrecken AG / ÖBB Infrastruktur AG in 1998. There he was responsible for the local construction supervision for the St. Peter-Seitenstetten section, was head of the local construction supervision for the Aschbach-Krenstetten section from 2001 to 2006 and has been head of construction management for the Lainzer Tunnel expansion since 2006.

Politics and functions

Schagerl joined the Socialist Party in 1976 and became chairman of the Socialist Youth in the same year. From 1985 to 1995 he was active as a local councilor for the community of St. Georgen am Reith, from 1995 to 2000 he acted as executive councilor and from 2000 to 2005 again as councilor. In 2005 he took over the function of the executive council and became parliamentary group chairman of the SPÖ. In 2009 Schagerl was elected mayor. Since 2010 he has held the position of member of the party presidium of the SPÖ district organization Amstetten. In the state elections in Lower Austria in 2013 , Schagerl ran for first place on the SPÖ list in the state constituency of Amstetten , after he had prevailed against his party-internal competitor, the mayor of St. Valentin Kerstin Suchan-Mayr , in a runoff election. He was sworn in as a member of the state parliament on April 24, 2013. On May 23, 2017, due to the upcoming state elections in 2018, there was another battle vote between Schagerl and Suchan-Mayr. This time the result was the opposite. Suchan-Mayr took over his mandate after the state elections in Lower Austria in 2018 .

In April 2018 it was announced that Birgit Krifter (SPÖ) will succeed him as Mayor of St. Georgen am Reith in May 2018.

Private

Schagerl is married and has a son and a daughter.
