Helmut Schmezko

Helmut Schmezko (born August 29, 1939 in Halberstadt ; †  June 2, 2013 in Lehrte ) was a German local politician of the Social Democratic Party of Germany .

Political activity

During his 40 years of voluntary work in the council of the city of Lehrte, Helmut Schmezko was mayor of the city of Lehrte from 1972 to 1974 and from 1976 to 2001 and subsequently held the office of council chairman from 2001 to 2008. In 2002 he was awarded the honorary title of "Honorary Mayor" by the City Council of Lehrte. Helmut Schmezko was the youngest mayor in Lower Saxony.

In addition to his membership in the administrative committee of the city of Lehrte, Helmut Schmezko represented the city of Lehrte in many societies and associations. For many years he was a member of the association assembly of the special purpose association Greater Hanover, the district assembly and the regional assembly of the Hanover region.

Helmut Schmezko was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
