Helvetiaplatz (Zurich)
The Helvetiaplatz in Zurich is located in District 4 and is adjacent to the Long Street and the Kanzleiareal on.
General
The square has had its name since the end of the 19th century. It is framed by the Volkshaus , the district building with the district court and the Lutherwiese, where the place of execution was in the Middle Ages. Right next to it is the office area with the school building, an alternative cinema and the Kanzlei cultural center. A food market takes place on Helvetiaplatz every Tuesday and Friday from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The sculpture monument to the work of Karl Geiser cannot be overlooked . It makes the place recognizable as a place that has been the center of May Day celebrations and demonstrations by the labor movement throughout the 20th century.
Events
Public events have always been held on and around Helvetiaplatz. As early as 1872, the festival hut with 5300 seats for the Swiss Federal Shooting Festival stood here. The square is best known today for the demonstrations on May 1st . The space is also used for other occasions.
- Every Tuesday and Friday from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. there is a market with fresh food on Helvetiaplatz.
- Every Saturday there is a flea market in the office area where you can find consumer goods.
- The Langstrasse Festival was an important part of the Langstrasse Plus image and upgrading campaign. It took place several times between 1992 and 2010.
- The Caliente is the largest Latin festival in Europe and in 2006 attracted an estimated 130,000 visitors.
- In the summer months of July / August there is an open air in the Xenix cinema in the office area.
- Various May Day events are held on Helvetiaplatz, the chancellery and barracks area.
- In 2006, 2007 and 2009 the championship celebration of the FCZ took place after the FCZ had won the Swiss championship in football.
