action

Bart Geraedts is a 13 year old boy in Limburg, Netherlands in the 1970s. He and his mother Gertie are strictly Roman Catholic, his father Wiel less so. His father gave him the old television as a present. He happened to see a sex scene with it; frightened, he switched to another program, but then back again. His father doesn't think it's so bad that he looks for it, but his mother does.

An unusual Belgian family moves to their village. Their daughter Moniek Verheije , the oldest child and older than Bart, is ill. Bart falls in love with her. The youngest, Peter, Bart's age, steals and also has little respect for the church. Although Bart hates this, he wants to be friends with him in order to get in contact with Moniek. Bart is torn between being in love, sexual experiences with Moniek, taking part in jaunts with stolen cars and thefts, and trying to lead a godly life. He confesses to the pastor (his uncle Sef) the sexual intercourse and to his horror he tells this to his mother. Both find it so unimaginably bad that they don't believe it. They think it's terrible that he has such fantasies.

Bart asks Moniek if she wants to marry him when he's 18. She replies that she doesn't love him.

Bart's father is released, making him manic-depressive and hostile to the church. Moniek is critically ill, which is why Bart takes her to a place of pilgrimage in Germany, driving a car himself. But no miracle happens and Bart begins to doubt his faith. He also feels guilty for Moniek's condition, as for his father's dismissal. Maybe these are punishments from God. You will be stopped by the police and taken home.

When Bart and Peter Bart's self-built chapel in the forest, they become careless from drinking alcohol and the chapel catches fire. The police arrive and now they also find the chalice stolen from the church. Peter committed the theft, but Bart also takes the blame.

When Moniek is dying, Gertie and Sef don't want Bart to visit them, but Wiel takes them to her home. Moniek reassures Bart that he was not to blame for her death. You're just unlucky.
