The four-eyed flat cone Hemiclepsis marginata (also called framed flat cone) is a species from the subclass of leeches (Hirudinea). As a flat leech , he not only takes care of the brood for his eggs, but also for the newly hatched young leeches.

features

The species reaches a length of 3 centimeters. It has two pairs of eyes on the heart-shaped mouth disc. The front pair of eyes are closer together compared to the back, the front eyes are smaller than the back. The back has a greenish or reddish brown color and up to 7 longitudinal rows of yellow spots and 4 longitudinal rows with small warts.

Occurrence and way of life

Hemiclepsis marginata's habitat is mostly standing, and more rarely flowing water. The species occurs in Europe and Asia. In contrast, it is rarely found in Central Europe. It sucks blood on amphibians and fish. She can move vigorously.

Hemiclepsis marginata is a proterandric hermaphrodite and, like the other members of the Plattegel family, takes care of the brood. The eggs are laid in gelatinous cocoons that are attached to the underside of the leeches. Oxygen-rich water is supplied to them by moving the back of the body. The young leeches hatched from the eggs suck on the parent animals and are carried around by them for some time until they can feed themselves.

Initial description

The leech was described by Otto Friedrich Müller in his 1774 work Vermium terrestrium et fluviatilium on page 46 in the part "Helminthica". Müller called him Hirudo marginata , the genus Hirudo was later divided into numerous other genera.
