Heng Swee Keat ( Chinese : 王瑞杰; pinyin : Wáng Ruìjié; born November 1, 1961 in Singapore ) is a Singaporean politician. As a member of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), he is currently Deputy Prime Minister (since 2019), Finance Minister (since 2015) and first Deputy Secretary General of the PAP (since 2018).

career

Heng Swee Keat received his pre-college education from the Raffles Institution . In 1983 Heng graduated from Christ's College , Cambridge with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics . In 1983, Heng began his career with the Singapore Police Force . In 1993, Heng received a Masters of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University . In 1997 he moved from the police to the administration of the Singapore Civil Service. He served in the Department of Education for a period before being named Principal Private Secretary to former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew (who was then Senior Minister). In 2001, Heng became permanent secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. He then was Managing Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore , the central bank of Singapore, from 2005 to 2011 .

In 2011, Heng was elected to parliament for the Tampines constituency. On May 18, 2011, Prime Minister Lee Hsien appointed Loong Heng as Minister of Education in the Cabinet. Heng was thus the second elected MP to become cabinet minister in his first term. He has been Minister of Finance since September 28, 2015. He collapsed after a stroke during a cabinet meeting on May 12, 2016 , and spent 6 weeks in a hospital during which he was represented in his political functions. After his full recovery, he was able to resume his post as MP and Minister of Finance on August 22, 2016.

On November 22, 2018, Heng succeeded Teo Chee Hean as the first deputy general secretary of the People's Action Party. On April 23, 2019, the Prime Minister's Office announced that Heng would take over as Singapore’s 12th Deputy Prime Minister, effective May 1, 2019. Because of these positions, he is considered a possible successor to Lee Hsien Loong as the country's next prime minister.
