Henner Fürtig

Henner Fürtig (* 1953 ) is a German historian and orientalist .

Life

Henner Fürtig studied Arabic and history at the University of Leipzig from 1971 to 1978 . In 1988 he received his doctorate there with the work The Iraqi-Iranian War: historical causes, course, regional effects - a case study on local wars between developing countries . He worked as an assistant (1976–1985) and senior assistant (1985–1993) at the Oriental Institute of the University of Leipzig. In Berlin he conducted research as a research associate (1993–1995) and project group leader (1996–2000) at the Center for the Modern Orient . He was a research fellow at the Institute for Asian Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 2001 to 2002. He worked as a research fellow at the German Orient Institute (2002-2007). Since February 2007 he has been a research assistant or director at the GIGA - Institute for Middle East Studies (IMES), responsible for Egypt, Arabian Peninsula, Iraq, Iran. In 2009 he was appointed to the professorship for Middle East Studies at the University of Hamburg .
