Peter Heine (born June 23, 1944 in Warendorf / Westphalia ) is a German scholar of Islam . He taught at the Universities of Münster and Bonn and most recently as Professor of Islamic Studies in the non-Arab region at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

biography

Heine studied Islamic studies, philosophy and ethnology in Münster and Baghdad from 1965 to 1971 . In November 1971 he was awarded a doctorate by Hans Wehr for a study of the West African kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhai from the point of view of the Arab authors of the Middle Ages. phil. PhD . In January 1978 he completed his habilitation in Münster for the subject of Islamic Studies. In the following time he taught there as a professor and led various projects such as B. the research focus Modern Orient in Berlin . In 1994 he was offered a position at the University of Bonn. From 1996 to 1998 he was the founding director of the Humanities Center for the Modern Orient in the Association of Humanities Centers in Berlin . After completing this activity, Heine became a member of the board of trustees of the Orient Foundation Hamburg and a member of the advisory board of the Merhaba project for the promotion of Turkish high school students in Germany at the Thomas-More-Academy in the Archdiocese of Cologne .

From 1996 until his retirement in 2009, Heine was the traditional specialist journal Orientalist literary newspaper - initially until 1999 with Horst Klengel . Journal for the science of the whole Orient and its relations to the neighboring cultures (OLZ). There he was responsible for the Islam section . In response to the September 11, 2001 attacks , Heine published his book Terror in Allah's Name just a month after the events , in which he examined the origins of radical Islamism.
