Henri Bédarida

Henri Bédarida (born March 9, 1887 in Lyon , † December 22, 1957 in Paris ) was a French Romanist , Italianist and literary scholar .

life and work

Bédarida passed the Agrégation d'italien and completed his habilitation in Paris in 1927 with the two Thèses Parme et la France de 1748 à 1789 (Paris 1927, Geneva 1977; Italian Milan 1985) and Les Premiers Bourbons de Parme et l'Espagne (1731-1802 ). Inventaire analytique des principales sources conservées dans les Archives espagnoles et à la Bibliothèque nationale de Madrid (Paris 1927, Florence / Paris 1969). He taught at the universities of Grenoble and Lyon. In 1936 he was appointed to the chair of Italian at the Sorbonne as successor to Henri Hauvette (later also dean). During the war he was involved in the Catholic Resistance and protested against the racial policy of the Vichy regime . He was the first president of the Center catholique des intellectuels français (CCIF).

Henri Bédarida was the father of the historian François Bédarida (1916–2001) and the father-in-law of the historian Renée Bédarida (1919–2015).
