Henri-Emile Bazin (born January 10 or October 20, 1829 in Nancy , † February 7 or 14, 1917 in Chenôve near Dijon ) was a French engineer and known for his research in the field of hydraulics . (The dates of life are given differently in different sources.)

He was a student of the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées and then assistant to Henry Darcy , whose work he continued. First he worked in Tonnerre near Dijon, then in 1854 on the Canal de Bourgogne ( Burgundy Canal ), which he enlarged and made navigable for larger ships. In 1875 (or 1876) he became chief engineer of the Corps des ponts et chaussées in Dijon, and in 1886 general inspector. In 1900 he retired and in 1913 became a member of the French Academy of Sciences .

He dealt scientifically with the flow of water in open channels , velocity distributions, free water surfaces and wave experiments. In 1865 he published the report “Recherches Hydrauliques” on currents in open channels , which established his fame. In addition, he developed a drainage formula . This Bazin formula provides the parameter C for Chézy's flow formula :
