Henriette Avram

Henriette Davidson Avram (born Henriette Regina Davidson , born October 7, 1919 in New York , † April 22, 2006 in Miami ) was an American programmer and librarian .

Life

In 1952 Avram began working for the National Security Agency . She stayed there for seven years. After an intermezzo in the private sector, she switched to the Library of Congress in 1965 - without having previously had a library training . There she should develop a data format for the exchange of bibliographic data. She then developed the MARC format that is still widespread in libraries today .

In 1992 Avram retired from the Library of Congress and moved to California, Maryland with her husband, Herbert Avram . When her husband died after 64 years of marriage, she moved to her last residence in Miami.

She and her husband had three children.
