Henrique Chaves

Henrique José Monteiro Chaves (born April 16, 1951 ) is a Portuguese lawyer and politician for the Portuguese Social Democrats . He held several ministerial offices in the Santa Lopes government .

Life

After completing his basic education, Chaves decided in 1969 to study law at the University of Lisbon , which he completed in 1975 with the licentiate ( licenciatura ) customary in Portugal . He specialized in civil, commercial and tenancy law.

After working temporarily as a lawyer and also at the Portuguese Bar Association ( Ordem dos Advogados ), he was Secretary General of the Portuguese Association of the Non-Daily Press between 1974 and 1975. Between 1975 and 1976 he had in the VI. holds the post of Assistant Secretary of State for Judicial Affairs in the Provisional Government.

Henrique Chaves is one of the founders of the right-wing liberal Portuguese Social Democrats and was also one of the first social democratic councilors in the Lisbon City Hall after the Carnation Revolution . Chaves was also mayor of the Lisbon borough of Lapa for two legislative terms . In the course of his life he also held numerous other offices and posts within the PSD. Between 1992 and 2002, Chaves was a member of the Assembleia da República for the constituency of Lisbon .

After the then Prime Minister José Manuel Barroso resigned in July 2004 and Pedro Santana Lopes took over the affairs of state, Chaves was appointed assistant to the Prime Minister with the rank of Minister. He held this office between July 17, 2004 and November 24, 2004. As part of a major cabinet reshuffle , he then took over the office of Minister for Sport and Youth, from which he resigned after just four days. He justified this with Pedro Santa Lopes' lack of loyalty to him. This surprising resignation in particular was considered by many observers to be one of the main reasons for the decision of the then Portuguese President to dissolve parliament and call new elections.

Chaves is married with two children.
