Henry B. Ollendorff

Henry B. Ollendorff (also: Ollendorf ; born March 14, 1907 in Esslingen ; died February 10, 1979 in Cleveland , Ohio ) was a German-born American lawyer and social worker .

Life

Born in Esslingen as the son of a Jewish ophthalmologist who converted to Christianity, he grew up in Darmstadt , studied law in Berlin and received his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1929 .

He was severely disabled by National Socialist legislation, was imprisoned for 13 months and emigrated to the USA in 1938 . His wife followed him in 1939. His stepmother was murdered in Auschwitz concentration camp .

In Cleveland he studied social work and then worked for underprivileged children in his new home.

He was sent to Germany by the US government in 1954 to teach courses for German youth leaders and social workers as part of the re-education program . The very successful activity then led to an - meanwhile worldwide - exchange of experts from the social field and to the establishment of the Council of International Fellowship - CIF .

A square in Darmstadt has been named after him since 2005.
