Henry Cele

Henry Cele ( pronunciation : [ hɛnˈri ˈǀɛ: le ]; born January 30, 1949 in Durban ; † November 2, 2007 ibid) was a South African actor and former football player. He achieved international fame with the title role in the 1986 television series Shaka Zulu .

Life and career

His first career peaked in the 1970s. Cele was a successful professional footballer at the time . As a goalkeeper , he draws attention to himself through his enormous agility, which earned him the nickname "Black Cat". After finishing his sporting career, he switched to acting, but continued to work as a football coach until his death.

Henry Cele played leading roles in a number of South African feature and television films and was repeatedly on the theater stage. Cele had his breakthrough in 1986 when he gained international fame for his portrayal of the Zulu King Shaka in the television series Shaka Zulu, co-produced by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) . In Germany, this series was shown on ZDF at the time. Cele had previously played the role of Shaka Zulu in a stage production. In 2001 he played this again in the TV movie Shaka Zulu: The Citadel . Other film productions in which Cele participated included a. Beyond Darkness and The Last Samurai , both from 1990, or the 1996 film The Spirit and Darkness . After his film career seemed to be over, he returned to KwaMashu , where he had previously lived.

Cele died of a serious infection at the age of 58 after a two week hospital stay. He left behind his wife Jenny Hollander and four sons from a previous marriage.
