Henry FitzHenry

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henry FitzHenry (also Henry FitzRoy ; * around 1100; † 1157 in Anglesey ) was a cambro-Norman nobleman.

Henry was an illegitimate son of King Henry I of England . He came from the king's relationship with the Welsh princess Nest , a daughter of Rhys ap Tewdwr von Deheubarth . He received small estates at Narberth and Pebidiog in northern Pembrokeshire . During Henry II's campaign against Wales in 1157 , he and his half-brother Robert FitzStephen led a fleet from Pembroke to Gwynedd to support the king's army advancing along the north coast of Wales. They probably went on a raid on the island of Anglesey on their own in July or August. The islanders lured them into an ambush that killed Henry FitzHenry, while Robert FitzStephen escaped wounded.

He had several children. His son Meiler FitzHenry took part in the Anglo-Norman conquest of Ireland and was royal justiciar of Ireland from 1200 to 1208 .
