Life

Malherbe and his family settled in Paris around the turn of the century. Under Albert Carré , Malherbe got a job at the Opéra-Comique and his career soon led him to its management. At the same time, Malherbe began working as a journalist for the daily Le Temps and between 1910 and 1936 he was one of its literary critic.

With effect from March 24, 1914, Malherbe was naturalized and on August 21 of the same year he volunteered for military service. He joined the artillery and was accepted as an officer candidate the following year. In 1916 he was promoted to sub-lieutenant and two years later he was made lieutenant. He was wounded several times, in 1917 and 1918 by German gas attacks. In the autumn of 1919 he was demobilized and returned to Paris.

After the end of the war , Malherbe was brought back to the Opéra-Comique and in the following year he succeeded Albert Wolff as its director until 1948. He then slowly withdrew into private life and devoted himself only to his literary work.
