Henry Mason (Trumpeter)

Henry Mason was an American blues and jazz trumpeter , cornet player, and arranger .

Mason played at the beginning of his career in Atlanta in the late 1920s as an accompanist for blues vocalists Fannie Mae Goosby ("Fortune Teller Blues", Brunswick 7030), Cleo Gibson ("I've Got Ford Movements In My Hips", Okeh 8700) ) and Sloopy Henry ("Jomo Man Blues", with Porter Grainger , Okeh 8845). During this time he played in the Territory Band of J. Neal Montgomery , for whom he also arranged (“Atlanta Low Down” and “Auburn Avenue Stomp”). In the early 1930s he was a member of Blanche Calloway's backing band , the Joy Boys (including on 78's such as “I'm Gettin 'Myself Ready For You” and “I Got What It Takes”, 1931); In 1936 Mason worked in Paris with Willie Lewis , with whom he recorded in 1941. 1938 in Stockholm with Leon Abbey . The last recordings were made in Zurich in 1941 with Eddie Brunner's Original Teddies. In the field of jazz he was involved in 13 recording sessions between 1928 and 1941.

The trumpeter should not be confused with the jazz trombonist of the same name from Georgia.
