Henry Squires (born May 7, 1825 in Bennington , Vermont , † January 14, 1907 in Burlington ) was an American singer.

Squires was trained as a singer by the organist and composer George William Warren . He first appeared publicly in a program by Jenny Lind during her American tour 1849-52. With Lucy Escott he took part in an event in New York's Tripler Hall in 1851 in favor of refugees from the Hungarian Revolution 1848-49 . In 1852 he traveled to Italy and made his debut in Naples in 1853.

He then appeared in operas by Giuseppe Verdi , Gaetano Donizetti and Vincenzo Moscuzzi in Sicily before joining JH Tully's National English Opera Company in 1857 , where he met again with Lucy Escott. In 1858 they both returned to New York and performed at Burton's New Theater for one season . At the Academy of Music he sang as the understudy of Pasquale Brignoli alongside Maria Piccolomini . In 1859 he appeared at Strakosch's McVicker's Theater in Chicago with Cora de Wilhorst .

In New Orleans Squires and Escott were hired by William Saurin Lyster , with whose opera company they set off in 1861 on a six-month tour of Australia. This was so successful that the planned six months turned into a seven-year stay. Operas such as Les Huguenots , Lurline , Don Giovanni , I Puritani , The Lily of Killarney by Julius Benedict , Faust , Le prophète , Oberon , Semiramide , L'Africaine , William Tell and A Masked Ball have been performed with great success, with regular leading roles Squires and Escott occupied.

After the troupe's return to America, which ended in financial disaster, Squire performed a few times with Lucy Escott and then joined a concert tour by Carlotta Patti . In April 1870 he had his last appearance as a singer in Patti's farewell concert in New York's Steinway Hall . The following month he married his long-time stage partner Lucy Escott, and they both retired in Paris. After Escott's death in 1895, he returned to the United States, where he died of a stroke in 1907.
