history

The first city park was created in 1824 near the Franciscan monastery and St. Adalbert's Church (near today's Słowackiego Street). It was closed in 1830 due to the sandy soil. The second park - later called the "Saxon Garden" - was created in the years 1841–1845 on the area of today's Wolności Square. Its area was 8044 m². Part of the garden was closed in 1905 in favor of the construction of the Orthodox Nikolaikirche and finally demolished together with this church.

The current park was created in 1870 in a small area on the right bank of the Zgłowiączka River on a completely unforested river slope. The extension project after 1916 was realized - in the English style - by the gardener Franciszek Szanior . During the Second Polish Republic , the park was expanded to an area of 23,446 m² and in 1926–1939 it was extended to the railway bridge.

In 1923 a kiosk selling fruit was set up in the park. In 1925 a concert shell was added, which formed the beginning of the later amphitheater , which was in operation until the end of the 20th century. Cultural events such as concerts and festivals were held here until it fell into disrepair at the beginning of the 21st century and was demolished in 2006 along with the adjacent Parkowa Café. In 2008 a playground was built in its place, which met with opposition from the residents.

There was a greenhouse in the 1920s. In 1924 a monument to Colonel Bechi (who also has his own street in Włocławek) was unveiled, but it was torn down in 1939. In the next decade, a pastry shop and a radio megaphone were built, among other things .

Characteristic

Weeping willow, with an almost horizontal trunk

Henryk Sienkiewicz Park is located at the mouth of the Zgłowiączka and Vistula , in the city center, next to the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption. The area of the park is 40.18 hectares , and the density of trees and shrubs is about 200 pieces per hectare. There are 65 tree species in the park, 53 of which are deciduous trees.

The writer Henryk Sienkiewicz became the park's patron in 1916. He had visited Włocławek between 1903 and 1904 in connection with a flood in the city, where he read a chapter of his novella and finally accepted an honorary membership in the Włocławek rowing club. The citizens arranged for his bust to be erected in the park in his memory.

One of the attractions of the park is a historic weeping willow , the trunk of which lies almost on the surface of the Zgłowiączka River. In November 2017, the city authorities decided to cut the tree down. The decision met with widespread protest from the residents, so the plan to fell the weeping willow was abandoned and instead it was decided to take better care of the tree.

Due to its location, the park is exposed to flooding when the Vistula floods. This happened in 1937 and 2010.
