Henschelhaus

Kassel branch of Danat-Bank (2009)

The Henschelhaus was a building in Kassel that was built from 1921 to 1923 as a branch of the Darmstadt and National Bank . Later, the lawyer Max Plaut had his office in the building. The building had been owned by the Henschel family since 1939 and housed the Henschelsche Familien-Verwaltung GmbH. The house was demolished in the spring of 2010. In the meantime, however, the facade has been reconstructed and incorporated into a new building.

Building description

Interior fittings received during the demolition work in May 2010

The 16-axis building follows the course of the street at the intersection of Neue Fahrt and Kölnische Strasse in downtown Kassel.

When designing the facade, the architect Karl Wittrock oriented himself towards the neighboring Brühl house , which was designed in the Rococo style and no longer exists today . In World War II, large parts of the Kassel city were destroyed or severely damaged. The air raids on Kassel also hit the Henschelhaus. The subsequent reconstruction of Kassel was characterized by the redesign of the structure of the inner city. Many buildings were not rebuilt at all or only partially. Externally, the Henschelhaus recorded mainly destruction in the roof structure. The original version with a gable roof was replaced by a mansard roof. This changed the exterior of the building significantly. Over the years, showcases were installed in the facade along Kölnische Strasse.

Rebuilding

The building complex, which includes not only the Henschelhaus but also a building from the 1950s facing Königsplatz , was bought by an investor in 2009 in order to build a new commercial building in its place. After a preliminary building inquiry, the building was removed from the list of monuments . An architectural competition is to decide on the final appearance of the new building. The preservation of the facades and the roof was requested by the monument protection authorities. The demolition of the building began in April 2010; a (significantly different) reconstruction of the facade is planned.
