The Herald Reef ( English for heralds reef ) is a reef off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located 1.5 km southwest of Petermann Island on the north side of the French Passage in the Wilhelm Archipelago .

The formation was first mapped during the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908–1910) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the reef that way in 1959 because it announced the beginning of the French Passage from the east.
