Herbert Hellhund

Herbert Hellhund (born February 20, 1950 ) is a German jazz trumpeter and musicologist. From 1986 until his retirement he was professor at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media and head of the rock, pop and jazz department there.

Life

Hellhund studied musicology, psychology and education at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen and trumpet at the University of Art in Graz . In 1984 he received his doctorate under Ekkehard Jost with a thesis on cool jazz , which was published by Schott in 1985 ("Cool Jazz - Basics of Its Origin and Development") and is a standard work. After completing his doctorate, he worked as an editor at Südwestfunk in Baden-Baden for two years before becoming a professor in Hanover in 1986, a. Taught jazz history, trumpet and improvisation. He retired in 2018. Hellhund has also performed as a trumpeter since 1979 (including at the Jazzfest Berlin see website), he has performed numerous times at international festivals and countless club appearances.
