Herbert Karlsson

Herbert Karlsson or Knut Herbert "Murren" Carlsson (born September 8, 1896 in Gothenburg ; † October 21, 1952 ibid) was a Swedish football player .

career

Karlsson first played for Annedals FF , IK Niord and IK Vega before moving to IFK Göteborg in 1917 . With the club he was Swedish champion in his first season.

Karlsson played 20 international matches for the Swedish national team between 1918 and 1922 and scored 19 international goals. For the national selection he took part in the Olympic Games in 1920 . With seven goals he was the tournament's top scorer.

In 1922 he emigrated to the United States , where he became the first professional player in Swedish football history. As Herbert Carlson, as he has called himself since then, he first played for the Viking Athletic Club in the New York State League , before moving to the Indiana Flooring factory team in 1923 . The following year, his team moved to the American Soccer League , at that time the strongest professional league on the east coast. Here he played three seasons before he undertook a Scandinavian tour with the Viking AC in the summer of 1927, after which he stayed at home until spring 1928. Then he returned to New York and played for the New Nork Nationals , with whom he won the League Cup in 1929. In 1930 the team was renamed the New York Giants and won the championship title under this name in 1931. He later worked for the New York Americans under Ernö Schwarz .

He returned to Europe at the 1936 Olympics , and after the tournament he went back to Sweden.
