Herbert Kirk

Herbert Viktor Kirk (born June 5, 1912 in Belfast , † March 4, 2006 ) was a Protestant Northern Irish politician of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP).

Life

Herbert Kirk graduated from the Queen's University of Belfast and worked before his entry into politics, as a Chartered Accountant ( Chartered Accountant ).

Kirk was a member of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP). Since the election of 23 November 1956, he belonged as a member of the Unionist Party Northern Ireland Parliament ( Parliament of Northern Ireland on). There he represented the constituency of Belfast Windsor until 1972 until the dissolution of the Northern Irish Parliament . In Stormont he soon played a leading role and eventually became the minister appointed.

In 1962 he became a member of the Privy Council of Northern Ireland. From March 1962 to July 1964 he was Labor and Social Affairs ( Minister of Labor and National Insurance ), from July 1964 to April 1965 Education and Teaching Minister ( Minister of Education ), and from 1965 to 1972 Finance Minister of Northern Ireland ( Minister of Finance ).

After the dissolution of the Northern Irish Parliament and the introduction of the Direct Rule (self-government) in March 1972, he supported Brian Faulkner , the then leader of the Ulster Unionist Party. Kirk proved to be a close ally of Faulkner in the political discussion about the introduction of an executive branch divided between unionists and nationalists and in bringing about the Sunningdale Agreement .

In 1973 Kirk was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly for the constituency of Belfast South ; he remained a Member of Parliament until May 1974. From January to May 1974 he was again Minister of Finance in the Northern Ireland Executive ( Head of the Department of Finance in the Northern Ireland Executive ).

After a health breakdown in May 1974, Kirk retired from politics and resumed his professional activity.
