Herbert Watzke

Herbert Watzke (* 1954 in Gmunden ) is an Austrian doctor , basketball official and former player.

career

Watzke comes from the youth of the Sportunion Gmunden , with the men's team of the club he was promoted to the basketball league in 1977 . In the same year he caused a stir with the national team when the promotion from the C to the A group was accomplished and the selection took part in the European Championship in Belgium in September 1977. During the tournament, in which the Austrians nevertheless remained without a win, Watzke scored 9.1 points per encounter. At club level, he played for UBSC Vienna in the late 1970s and early 1980s alongside other national players such as Erich Tecka and Herbert Haselbacher , became national champion with UBSC and played with the team in the European championship . At the elimination tournament for the 1980 Summer Olympics , Watzke was used in four games in May 1980 and averaged ten points for the national team.

In September 2004 Watzke became Vice President of the Austrian Basketball Bundesliga (ÖBL). From November 2004 he was also Vice President of the Association of Friends of Basketball in the Austrian Bundesliga.

After completing his medical degree in 1980, Watzke completed his doctorate, completed his specialist training in internal medicine in 1989 and completed his habilitation in 1991. In 1991 ( cardiology ) and 1996 ( hematology and oncology ) he acquired further specialist qualifications. In 2005, Watzke took up a professorship in palliative medicine at the Medical University of Vienna , established the palliative ward at the Vienna General Hospital and took over the management of the department. Until 2014 he was chairman of the Austrian Palliative Society and after resigning from this position remained on the board.

The focus of Watzke's research is on palliative medicine.
