Heretic ( English for heretics or heretics) is a first-person shooter in a fantasy scenario, which was developed in 1994 by Raven Software in cooperation with id Software . It was continued with the game Witches in 1995 and with Hexen 2 in 1997 . In 1998 a playfully modified successor was released with the title Heretic 2 .

description

Heretic appeared in 1994 and was first published by id Software as a shareware version (with the first episode “City of the damned”) and as a full version with three episodes. In 1996 the game from GT Interactive came under the title Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders (v1.3) with two further episodes on the regular market. There were also three levels that can only be reached via a cheat (E6M1 – E6M3). The patch to expand with the new levels can be downloaded for free.

The game uses a modified version of the Doom engine and was one of the first first-person shooters that gave the player the ability to look up and down. Heretic's game design is heavily based on Doom, and it differs mainly in its fantasy scenario. A reference to thematically related role-playing games is the inventory, which allows you to collect magical objects ( power-ups ) and use them when necessary.

The player slips into the skin of a nameless hero and has to fight his way through numerous levels such as castles and dungeons with the help of weapons such as a crossbow and various magical ranged weapons , with creatures such as gargoyles , golems and undead knights standing in his way. Usually the player has to find different keys to access further areas in the respective level until he has found the exit.

Although Heretic 2 loosely continues the plot, Heretic already forms a trilogy with Hexen: Beyond Heretic and Hexen 2 .

The Heretic and Hexen engine was initially released under a license for non-commercial use, and finally placed under the free GPL license in September 2008 .

continuation

Heretic 2 was released in 1998 and was published by Activision .

In contrast to the first part, the game is no longer a first-person shooter, but a third-person shooter . Heretic 2 uses a modified version of the Quake 2 engine from id Software .

The player slips back into the role of Corvus, now mentioned by name, to find a cure for an epidemic that has come over his hometown of Silverspring. His journey takes him through a wide variety of contiguous areas such as swamps, caves, castles and Silverspring itself. Some of the weapons and various spells known from the first part are used to fight against various creatures, but also against elves infested by the disease To defend.
