Herring stalls
The herring booths (Polish: Kramy Śledziowe ) is a group of houses, consisting of a total of eight houses, on the ring in the Lower Silesian town of Legnica (German: Liegnitz).
location
The eight houses are in the inner block of the Liegnitzer Ring. They are in the immediate vicinity of the old town hall and the city theater . They can be found at Rynek 24–31 .
History and architecture
The group of houses was built in the 16th century instead of medieval fish stalls. The first mention of the houses is dated to the year 1574. In the following decades the houses were redesigned several times. As a result, some houses have a design in the Renaissance style , while the others have a classicist facade. The four classical herring stalls received their exterior mainly in the 18th century.
The houses all have three floors, a shared arcade and gables in the Baroque or Classicism style .
Pictures with a sgraffito technique have been preserved on two houses , similar to those of the house for the quail basket on the Liegnitzer Ring . The pictures date from 1570, but were then covered with plaster. It was not until 1934 that the pictures were released again. The coat of arms of the Duchy of Liegnitz and Brieg can be found here, among other things.
