The Herkules IV starter winch is a diesel- powered cable winch for the winch launch of gliders . This type of winch was built by the Czechoslovak manufacturer Aerotechnik Moravská Třebová in the 1980s and early 1990s. She is the successor to Hercules III . In contrast to the Herkules III, the Herkules IV is not able to drive itself and is therefore dependent on a towing vehicle. It also has a more powerful engine, a closed driver's cab and a more complex drive. Starting winches of this type are used in large numbers in eastern Germany and in many other countries and have proven to be robust and reliable, but maintenance-intensive.

technology

Almost all of the winch technology is based on existing assemblies from the commercial vehicle industry. The core of the winch is an air-cooled V8 4-stroke diesel engine of the type Tatra T2-928-2. This transmits its mechanical power to the so-called transfer case via a fluid coupling and a single-disc dry clutch . The dry clutch is only used to tighten the rope before the winch is started. The transfer case distributes the power to the two cable drums of the winch. The drums are small in diameter and large in width. The tow rope is evenly wound onto the drum via an automatically operating winding device, which moves the azimuth rollers directly. If the towed glider is not in front of the winch, the side load must be borne by the winding device. A gravity brake brakes the drum when there is no rope load to make it easier to pull out the rope.

With two clutches, two brake systems, a winding device and a combination of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic control, the entire construction is very complex, also more complex than the previous models H3 and H2.

The fuel consumption of around 0.3 L / start enables very economical operation.
