Herlegaud

Herlegaud , also Erlegaud or Herregaud (* 8th century ; † around 820 ), was a Benedictine , abbot of the Abbey of Saint-Bénigne in Dijon and archdeacon of Langres .

Life

Herlegaud came from one of the first and most influential families in the Kingdom of Burgundy , who were particularly wealthy in the area around Dijon.

With the assumption of the abbot dignity in the abbey of Saint-Bénigne at the beginning of the 9th century Herlegaud devoted himself in particular to the restoration of the monastic discipline, which had suffered increasingly under his predecessors. In particular, the demand for poverty, as laid down in the Regula Benedicti , was not well received by the monks of the abbey - not a few of the friars obtained income from property that they had received from relatives.

Herlegaud endeavored to reform such abuses, but faced considerable resistance. In 819 he set a good example and gave the abbey, which he was director, his entire paternal inheritance. With the same zeal, Herlegaud managed in the same year to persuade Emperor Ludwig the Pious , Count Amadeus von Oscheret and other landlords to provide financial means for the restoration of the dilapidated monastery basilica.

Herlegaud could not see the completion of the restoration work, as he died a short time later, around 820.
