history
The company began making bedroom furniture in 1905 under the name Star Furniture Company . In 1923, Herman Miller took over the majority stake in the company and renamed it Herman Miller Furniture Company . Dirk Jan (DJ) De Pree , Miller's son-in-law and former President of Star Furniture , has now taken on this position at Herman Miller Inc. Four years later he founded the Herman Miller Clock Company , which he also took over and which later took the name of his brother when the Howard Miller Clock Company continued to operate.
With the presentation of the Executive Office Group, designed by Gilbert Rohde, the road to success for Herman Miller Inc. in the field of office furniture began in 1941 . In 1946 the architect and designer George Nelson became the company's first design director. In the same year, Charles and Ray Eames , the most important designers of the 2nd modern age, were tied to the house. For Herman Miller Inc., the Eames couple designed a significant number of home and office furniture, the majority of which are still produced today and are considered "design classics". Alexander Girard became the most important textile designer of the company in 1951 . In 1957, Vitra took over the production rights for the manufacture of Eames furniture in Europe from Herman Miller.
The designers Paul László and Isamu Noguchi also designed for Herman Miller.
