Entrepreneur

In 1906, his father Ferdinand Salling created the basis for the Salling department store chain with a manufactory that developed into Salling department store .

In 1953, Herman Salling took over his father's business in the pedestrian area of Aarhus . That was the starting point for the Jysk Supermarked supermarket chain in 1960. In the same year he opened the first Føtex supermarket. Two years later, the Salling department store in Ålborg was added.

In order to obtain the necessary capital for a further expansion of the business activities, Herman Salling entered into a cooperation with the shipowner A. P. Møller in 1964 , who became a silent partner, while Salling took over the management of the company alone.

In 1964, Jysk Supermarked was renamed Dansk Supermarked . In 1999 Salling withdrew from the management of the company, but remained on the board. The company had 30,000 employees in 2001 and generated annual sales of 46.7 billion Danish kroner (approx. 5.8 billion euros).

In the management of the business, Salling provided clear guidelines and ensured a tight organization, severely limiting the freedom of employees. He fired employees who did not meet his expectations of honesty , hard work , precision and the fulfillment of duty . Every Saturday morning Salling called his executives to a conference because he said that top management should not have time off while the salespeople served customers.
