Hermann (Münsterschwarzach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann († August 13th in the second half of the 13th century) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Münsterschwarzach . As such, however, he is only entered in Heinrich Wagner's abbot series. That is why the term of office of the abbot is not recorded. Wagner entered it between Simon and Rudiger von Langheim.

Münsterschwarzach before Hermann

The renovation of the monastery buildings in Münsterschwarzach began under Abbot Sigehard . In 1151 a sarcophagus was built for some of the most important abbots. His successors also had the monastery continued to be built. Abbot Gozwin bought new altars and began building a cloister, which was completed under Trageboto . Construction work suffered a dampening in 1228 when a battle between the Würzburg bishops and the Counts of Castell triggered a fire that partially destroyed the monastery.

Life

The only source in which Abbot Hermann is mentioned is the Ottobeuren Nekrolog . "Hermannus Abbas Svarza" died there on August 13th. The abbot remained unknown to the rest of the monastery chroniclers, so that not a single official act was passed down. Possibly Hermann was elected immediately after the death of Abbot Simon . That would make the year 1248 likely for taking office.

Individual evidence

  1. Since the abbot is only recorded in the Ottobeurener Nekrolog and the dates are missing in this document, the exact year of death is not known.
