Simon (Münsterschwarzach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Simon († April 3, 1248 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Münsterschwarzach from 1233 to 1248 .

Münsterschwarzach before Simon

The abbots who headed the monastery in Münsterschwarzach before Simon took office continued the principle of nobility, so that the convent only consisted of second-born noblemen from the area. Actually, the reforms introduced in Hirsau at the beginning of the 12th century should have remedied this, for which even monks from the Black Forest monastery had been brought to the Main. Under Abbot Dietrich I , the reforms also began to take effect in Schwarzach.

In addition to the choir prayer, his successors also intensified the expansion and renovation of the monastery buildings. In 1151, under Abbot Sigehard , a sarcophagus was built for the most important abbots of the monastery. This was followed by the construction of a narthex for the church and the expansion of the cloister , which was completed under Abbot Trageboto. Abbot Gottfried was even commissioned by the Pope to investigate the miracles that occurred at the grave of Otto von Bamberg. However, only a few sources are still available for the 13th century.

Life

Nothing is known about the origins and training of the future abbot Simon. He first appeared in the sources during his appointment as abbot. Abbot Herold died at the beginning of 1233 and Simon followed him relatively quickly as head of the monastery. Simon was first mentioned in 1235 in a document between the Haug Abbey and the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach , where he was noted as a witness.

Before that he had already taken care of the donation from the widow of the "Shado" von Lankheim. She received a confirmation from the monastery, which the abbot signed. Furthermore, "Abbot S." was also mentioned in another document, which was issued in 1246. Abbot Simon died in 1248. As for the date of death, the necrologists of Münsterschwarzach and that of the Ottobeuren monastery name April 3rd. Only the so-called "Chronicon" is based on April 2nd.
